Le Timor à feu et à sang (1941-1945)

Résumé : Le Timor Oriental compte parmi les territoires envahis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale tant par les forces alliées que par celles de l’Axe, à la seule différence que l’autorité de tutelle, le Portugal, a un statut d’État neutre pendant le conflit. Face à une remise en question de la souveraineté portugaise à Timor, Salazar se voit emprunté car il souhaite pouvoir garantir l’intégrité de son territoire européen et d’outre-mer après la fin de la Guerre. Une bataille diplomatique est alors lancée entre Lisbonne, Londres, Tokyo et Washington afin de libérer le Timor Oriental du joug australien, néerlandais et japonais. Cet article met en lumière les quelques démarches entreprises pour résoudre la question de la bataille de Timor tant d’un point de vue diplomatique que du point de vue local avec les actions du gouverneur portugais à Timor de l’époque, Manuel de Abreu Ferreira de Carvalho.

Resumo: Timor Leste é um dos territórios invadidos durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial pelas forças Aliadas e do Eixo, com a única diferença que a autoridade tutelar, Portugal, tem um estatuto neutro durante o conflito. Confrontado com o questionamento da soberania portuguesa em Timor, Salazar fica embaraçado porque ele deseja garantir a integridade do seu território europeu e ultramarino após o fim da guerra. Uma batalha diplomática é então lançada entre Lisboa, Londres, Tóquio e Washington para libertar Timor Leste do jugo australiano, holandês e japonês. Este artigo destaca algumas etapas para resolver a questão da Batalha de Timor tanto do ponto de vista diplomático como do ponto de vista local, com as acções do governador português em Timor da altura, Manuel de Abreu Ferreira de Carvalho.

Abstract: East Timor is one of the territories invaded during the Second World War by both Allied and Axis forces, with the only difference that the guardianship authority, Portugal, has a neutral status during the conflict. Faced with a questioning of Portuguese sovereignty in Timor, Salazar is borrowed because he wants to be able to guarantee the integrity of its European territory and overseas after the end of the war. A diplomatic battle is then launched between Lisbon, London, Tokyo and Washington to free East Timor from the Australian, Dutch and Japanese yoke. This article highlights the steps taken to resolve the issue of the Battle of Timor both from a diplomatic point of view and from a local point of view with the actions of the Portuguese governor in Timor at the time, Manuel de Abreu Ferreira de Carvalho.
